The new Volkswagen Golf GTI

The new Volkswagen Golf GTI Since the debut of the first and the discontinuation of the fifth generation, more than 1.7 million buyers made the GTI to the world’s bestseller. Now the new GTI is at the ready: at the Paris Motor Show (4th to 19th October 2008) Volkswagen will be demonstrating the design study of the new Golf GTI at its world premiere. The GTI suspension with a new electronic limited-slip diff (XDS) defines curves and traction in a completely new way. A GTI with a top speed of 240 km/h that with its 155 kW / 210 bhp strong turbocharged engine is even more fun and, on average, only uses 7.5 litres.

The sixth generation Golf GTI will go into series production in the spring of 2009 – as usual with a unique connection between sporty suspension and agile engine. The engine develops already at 1,800 rpm a maximum torque of 280 newton metres. The sprint from 0 to 60mph is achieved in 6.9 seconds. A stand-off between wind resistance and output occurs only just at 240 km/h.
Lowered by 22 millimetres and equipped with a new sports suspension, the springs, shock absorbers and rear anti-roll bars of the design study have been completely reworked. Furthermore, the optional adaptive chassis control DCC feature will also be available for the future GTI.

LA Preview: Saab 9-4X shows up early

The LA Auto Show is still a couple months away, but images of vehicles set to be unveiled in the land of fruits and nuts are already leaking onto the web. GM's Chilean website had the above photo of the production Saab 9-4X available for all to see earlier today, so now we know the production model looks almost identical to the 9-4X Biopower concept from last year's Detroit Auto Show. We'd be interested to see if the concept's integrated tail pipes and large front/side air dams make it to production but, judging from spy photos we've seen, probably not. The 9-4X will be built on the same platform as the upcoming front- or all-wheel-drive Cadillac SRX, which will also be unveiled this auto show season.

We don't have many details on the 9-4X just yet, but it will have a turbocharged 2.0L engine with 245 hp and 265 lb-ft mated to a six-speed automatic. The concept also ran on ethanol, which is also likely for the production vehicle considering that two thirds of all vehicles in Sweden are of the flex fuel variety. Other engine choices could include GM's 3.6L V6, which is likely to be found under hood of the SRX at launch, and an upcoming 250-hp 2.9L diesel. Either way, European customers will likely have an engine lineup twice as large as what we'll be offered in the U.S. source

Dodge Challenger Super Stock Drag Package Available For Order...If You're Man Enough

We're stoked that Chrysler is offering a Dodge Challenger Drag Pak turn-key racer, but how exactly do you go about ordering one from your local Dodge dealer? Since these mighty Mopars are going to be limited production, you gotta prove you're worthy. First, you're required to submit your application in writing to a dealer, who will then fax it to Mopar Motorsports' secret lair. Keep in mind that this is all first-come first-served, so you probably want to get a fax confirmation to make sure your paperwork went through. But what qualifications will buyers have to meet?
It's recommended that potential buyers have "a current Competition License or sanctioning body affiliation prior to ordering their vehicle." So, n00bs need not apply. That's because Mopar wants to put their best foot forward with the Drag Challenger. They've even specified that the "buyer is encouraged to have the Challenger Drag Pak vehicle in competition within a reasonable amount of time." We're assuming that's also to weed out any speculating collector-types, as the profit margin on the vehicles will likely be slim to none. Besides, nobody should ever take a brand new race car and seal it in a bubble in a locked garage. [Mopar via Allpar]

Toyota Considering Prius Brand, Hybrid Priusamino Closer To Reality

The Eco Car War is heating up and Toyota is considering creating a Prius brand in an effort to open up a new front. This possible move would take advantage of the fact that, next to the word 'hybrid' itself, the Prius nameplate is most associated in this market with eco-friendly vehicles. Toyota already has the largest base of loyal customers, and a variety of Prius-branded vehicles would allow the company to grab buyers who might otherwise consider the 2011 Chevy Volt or 2009 Honda Insight.

This isn't merely idle talk. Toyota successfully created the Scion brand as an alternative to its larger brand. Additionally, Toyota's North American Sales Chief Jim Lentz told Reuters that "there is a definite desire for us to [create a Prius brand]" and that new dealerships were being constructed with space for the eco-brand.This could mean smaller hybrids, sportier hybrids and possibly even small truck hybrids. How Much Car Tech Is Too Much Car Tech?

Technology in a car isn't necessarily a bad thing. At one point, inflated rubber tires were considered new technology. But the transfer of the silicon chip to the automobile has led to innovations in the way we interface with vehicles. Just today we announced the Volt will sense how far you are from home and adjust your driving; the 1-Series will have in-car Google search; even your NY Driver's License will be electronic. Fuel injection is awesome but how much car tech is too much car tech?

On the driving side there's ESP, DTS, ATC, VTEC, i-VTEC, MIVEC, OPP. For passengers, you've got MP3 compatibility, GPS, Bluetooth, XM, Sirius TravelLink, DVD players and HAL. What's good. What's bad? What can a purist accept? What must a purist eschew? Where's the line?

Toyota Mark X reviews

The Toyota Mark X shares the same rear wheel drive platform as the Lexus GS luxury sedan and was developed with the concept of creating a dynamic and stylish sedan that enhances the joy of driving. Sharp, deeply sculpted character lines and attractive surfaces, together with a three-lamp configuration for the headlights and an integrated rear bumper and diffuser, convey a sense of quality suitable for a luxury sedan. Proportions suitable for a comfortable rear wheel drive vehicle convey the driving performance at a glance. A silhouette with a low center of gravity combines with a trapezoidal form to express dynamism and energy.

The Mark-X has a 2.5 liter V6 engine that generates 212 horsepower. Transmission for the Mark X is a Sequential Shift-matic transmission that offers full automatic operation as well as a pseudo-manual mode for a more controlled drive. The automatic 6-speed gearbox offers smooth and noiseless cruising. Additional driving pleasure suitable for a new platform comes from class-leading strong driving performance, excellent maneuverability and driving stability, as well as from high levels of quietness and riding comfort.

The Mark-X features excellent and innovative lighting, including a large, advanced ceiling light that uses LEDs, as well as lights in other interior areas including foot areas and doors. The lighting patterns as well as the intensity of the illumination are automatically controlled according to the circumstances to create a new interior feel, such as when a door is open. When driving, auto headlights are switched on whenever lighting is poor

--------------------------------------------------------------

Toyota is aiming for a more male audience with this Mark-X, in their thirties and with a family. This Mark-X has a distinct character with its dynamic and stylish curves, and it's more aimed at the middle part of the market despite the fact that the accessories list contains everything to turn it into a luxury car. you can get, for example, magnificent headlights, a stylish front grille and an extensive list of security features. This X comes with GOA (Global Outstanding Assessment), a system that makes that the bodywork is designed in such a way that it protects the passengers as good as possible in case of a collision.

when it comes to engines, you get the choice between a 4GR-FSE 2,5 L V6 direct-injection and a 4GR-FSE 3 L V6 direct-injection that develops 212bhp. That power can be delivered to the rear wheels only or to all four.

With the arrival of the Lexus IS, there is still a future for this Mark-X as it is marketed a bit below the IS, but the target audience is quite similar after all. We'll have to wait and see what will happen in the future...

0-60 mph: 3.5 seconds
0-100 mph: 7.7 seconds
0 - 1/4 Mile: 11 sec.
Engine: V8 806 bhp @ 6900 rpm

The Koenigsegg CCX supercar is one of Europe's premiere racing cars, but it is only available for consumption by those who have the ability to shell out the money needed for such an expensive, yet luxurious purchase. The Competition Coupe X is one of Koenigsegg's latest exotic car creations, all of which are known to be some of the best speed cars in the world. Koenigsegg sports cars are not available for mass consumption, mainly due to the large price of such automobiles. Base price is $540,000 + taxes, while fully equipped supercar costs $600,900 + taxes. The Koenigsegg CCX is a great purchase for those who can afford it, due to the fact that it is the tenth anniversary issue of the 1996 CX supercar model, which is one of Koenigsegg's best creations.

The supercharged V8 806 bhp @ 6900 rpm (redline at 7600 rpm) engines inside 1180 kg (2691 lbs) Koenigsegg CCX exotic cars are specially created for the people who design the Koenigsegg CCX though the design is highly based off of the Ford Modular engines, which provide other foreign companies with some of the best engine templates available. The engine is very compatible is various fuel types, and is able to run via gasoline and other bio-fuels, which are proving to be highly marketable, as well as the cars that can accommodate such technological advances. It is fully compliant with California emission regulations and is a street-legal motor. Koenigsegg CCX prides itself on being one of the best producers of tough, speedy cars, while also trying to adhere to environmental procedures that are growing with the high fuel prices and a stricter outlook on global warming.

The Koenigsegg CCX is the world's fastest car with a V8 engine, and has consistently won awards from various institutions all over the world, not only for its design and ability to operate at high speeds, but also for the ability of the people at Koenigsegg CCX to keep reinventing their product in a way that helps other philanthropic organizations. The Koenigsegg CCX is a great supercar to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the CX, while still being a great car independent of any others.

Lamborghini Gallardo

Lamborghini Gallardo specs
Top Speed: 191 mph / 309 km/h
0-60 mph: 4.1 seconds
0-100 mph: 9.2 seconds
0 - 1/4 Mile: 12.4 sec @ 118 mph
Engine: V10 DOHC 4 valve 5-liter

Italian cars have always been on the wish list of every sports car lover, especially the Lamborghini. Of all Lamborghini supercar models, Lamborghini Gallardo holds a very special place and deserves a very special mention. It is an entry-level sports car from Lamborghini and its success is so big that it remains the most-produced Lamborghini car of the company to date. Ever since its introduction to the market, over 5000 supercars have been built which is an unparalleled achievement in the history of Lamborghini. It is considered a competitor to Ferrari 360 and Ferrari F430. The Gallardo sports car is named after a popular breed of fighting bull, which fits it perfectly. When the project of Gallardo was about to get started, it was conceptualized to be a sports car which could be also used for everyday uses. Looking at its details, we will have to say that they have succeeded in doing that.

The supercar is amazing to look at with a stylish aluminum space frame. It has a mid-rear mounted engine and the gearbox is placed behind the engine. The Gallardo sports car has a permanent four wheel driving system with low center gravity which makes for a great drive. It has two mounted water radiators in the front and a one sided mounted oil cooler and an independent double wishbone suspension which aptly fits the system. As per the rich tradition of Lamborghini sports cars, a whole lot of attention has gone into the weight distribution system of the car. 42% of the weight is distributed to the front and 58% of the weight is distributed to the rear end. This weight system is said to be the perfect one for a sports car, in order to achieve the best possible traction and for easy braking and handling. It is a compact car, just about 167 inches in length and has been packaged well. In fact, it is considered one of the best two-seater high performance cars in the segment.

The supercar Gallardo engine is largely based on the good old straight-5 design of Audi. It has a 520 bhp V 10 engine which is powerful to hit high speeds on both country and city roads. The sports car can hit a maximum speed of 196 mph and can clock 0-60 in four seconds. It has two types of transmissions – the traditional six speed manual transmission and an electro-hydraulic auto clutch manual, which is aptly called the E-gear. You can make shifts very fast thanks to the control offered by the manual. You don’t have to manually operate the clutch, as it can be controlled by the paddles fit behind the steering wheel. This gives great convenience while driving and works way better than the conventional transmission system. Perhaps the best thing about Lamborghini engineering, particularly in this sports car, is that it has been designed in such a way that it is equally pleasurable to drive on a race track as well as on city and country roads. A lot of attention went into the engineering to make sure that the supercar gives the same performance while racing as well as pleasure driving, and they have just got that right.

The cost of Lamborghini Gallardo ranges from $175,000 to $200,000. There are four variants of the Gallardo available in the market namely the Gallardo Spyder, Gallardo SE, Gallardo Nera, and Gallardo Superleggera.

Porsche Carrera GT

Porsche Carrera GT specs
Top Speed: 205 mph / 330 kph
0-60 mph: 3.6 seconds
0 - 1/4 Mile: 11.3 sec @ 131.6 mph
Engine: DOHC 4 / valves 5.7-liter V-10

This Porsche's sports car is an open two-seater that comes with an easy to use roof made of lightweight carbon.
Originally Carrera GT was built for the street, however it is obvious that it is a racing car. It produced such monstrous amounts of horse power from its V10 engine that labeling it a simple street car is totally inappropriate. It easily qualifies to be named a super car. Carrera GT extends the possibilities of road driving and racing to the whole new level. It features an engine that easily tops the charts of the most powerful and fastest road cars.
With its imposing rear wing, this super sports car is easily spottable from any angle as a powerful and fast presence on the road.
Carrera engine has an incredibly low (even for a supercar) gravity center, a sixty-eight degree V angle and 4 valves for each head of cylinder. It's engine weights astonishingly only 214 kg.
911 model has been Porsche's top selling car for over three decades, however when the new Carrera GT with its specific style and substance came out, it quickly took the crown of top selling Porsche sports car. As of May 2006, 1,270 Carrera GT's had been sold.

2005 Saleen S7 Twin Turbo

Saleen S7 Twin Turbo specs

Top Speed: 248 mph / 399.1 km/h
0-60 mph: 2.8 seconds
0-100 mph: 6 seconds
0 - 1/4 Mile: 10.7 secs. @ 136 mph
Engine: V8, 7-liter 750 HP Twin-Turbo

Saleen's S7 is America's first and up to date the only exotic supercar with mid-engine configuration. When in 2002 S7 went on sale, it was the only street-legal car in the United States that has more than 500 horse power output and 500 lb-ft of torque. S7 Twin-Turbo is the successor of the already legendary supercar S7. Like in any other true supercar, the doors of Saleen S7 Twin-Turbo open upward and away from the body. It features an even more powerful all-aluminum V8 engine, which produces 750 horse power @ 6300 rpm and 700 lb-ft of torque. Redline is at 6500 rpm. 2006 version of Saleen exotic car also has one unique interior feature - a video rear-view mirror. There actually is a small video camera mounted in the rear of the fast car, which transmits the view to the driver. The main idea here was not to use standard rear-view mirrors in favour of aerodynamics, thus reducing aero drag and increasing down force.

2007 Porsche 911 GT3

Porsche 911 GT3 specs
Top Speed: 193 mph / 310 km/h
0-60 mph: 4.1 seconds
Engine: 415 HP at 7600 rpm

The 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 is a track sports car that was designed to meet the demands of regular road use. Porsche sports car which made its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show last year features a 415-horsepower, six-cylinder naturally aspirated engine that can rev up to 8,400 rpm. The new car features shortened gear ratios which combined with the high-revving engine pushes the GT3 to an acceleration of 60mph from zero in just 4.1 seconds. Not only that the engine is fuel efficient and provides consistent torque.

The GT3 boasts of a standard Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) that provides the sports car firmer damping allowing for superior performance and comfort when being driven on the tracks or on uneven roads or terrain, giving it a definite advantage over the Porsche Carrera. The anti-roll bars remain similar to the Carrera but the PASM gives it a wider control range. This allows the GT3 to speed up even on bumpy roads and improves turning stability. The responsive steering and the six-speed manual transmission provide precise control and stellar response. Aside from the acceleration, the GT3 has better handling than the Carrera.
The reduced weight also contributes to the GT3´s handling. The GT3 sports car has been designed for maximum performance with the lower spoiler increasing the down force and speed. The airflow rates were also improved with the throttle valve enlarged to 82 centimeters and a low-backpressure exhaust system.

With the GT3, Porsche once again proves that "there is no substitute". The sleek design, lowered spoiler, 19-inch alloy sport wheels, the 2007 Porsche 911 GT3 is performance and beauty combined. The front has large air inlets while the back has adjustable wings that can be used to improve down force. It was enhanced with traction-slip and drag-torque control functions that can also be disabled.

Safety features of this sports car include: anti-lock brakes with cross-drilled discs. High-performance ceramic brakes perfect for weekend track-outings are optional. Front, side-impact and side curtain-type airbags are standard. The new car also features electronic stability system. The sports car´s interiors are made of high-caliber materials providing comfort for regular road use. Aside from comfort, the GT3 interior is a study in elegance with owners having a choice whether to do the seatbelts and seat stitching in red. The bucket seats feature Alcantara system and the shifter knobs and steering wheels have alcantara trimmings. The fierce Porsche sports car is enhanced with a premium sound system, cruise control, keyless entry and improved sound insulation material. All primary controls are located within easy reach at the center panel.

This stunning ride is well worth every penny, with a price tag of just over US$ 100,000, the GT3 sports car provides enthusiasts with a deal like no other. The Porsche 911 GT3 offers reliability, practicality, performance, and composure in one tight and sleek package. Aside from the price, the biggest selling point of the Gt3 is more involved and pleasurable driving experience that sports car enthusiasts can expect from it.

Maserati MC12

Maserati MC12 specs
Top Speed: 205.1 mph / 330 km/h
0-60 mph: 3.8 seconds
Engine: 6-liter V12

Now owned by it's once most fierceful rival Ferrari, Maserati made MC12, a two door coupe sports car which is designed first and foremost to annihilate its competition on the racing track in FIA GT Championship. While MC12's design is slightly related to the famous Ferrari Enzo, it is a trully respectable competitor not only to Lamborghini or Porsche supercars, but to Ferrari's own power beasts.
MC12 has a V12 engine that was downtuned from the supercar Ferrari Enzo 660 PS to 630 PS (at 7000 rpm). However it remains a DOHC with 65 degree with four valves per cylinder.
MC12´ gearbox is also identical to the one used in Ferrari Enzo sports car, it´s Ferrari´s six-speed manual gear shifting box with paddles behind the steering wheel for quick and easy access.
Only 25 models of fast car MC12 were built in 2004 and another 25 in year 2005. Only the luckiest sports car and supercar collecting enthusiasts were able to obtain themselves one of these exotic car beauties.

Orca SC7

Orca SC7 specs
Top Speed: 248 mph / 400 km/h
0-60 mph: 2.6 seconds
Engine: Audi Twin Turbo V-8

Orca (much like in Pagani Zonda) uses super-light materials to reduce the weight of this supercar as much as possible. The result is obvious, SC7 weights just 850 kg. Its engine produces 738 ft lbs at 4200 rpm torque and outputs 850 horsepower, which sets power to weight ratio to 1 bhp:1 kg. The production of this Swiss supercar is limited to only 7 automobiles.

2006 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti specs
Top Speed: 196 mph / 315 km/h
0-60 mph: 4.2 seconds
0-100 mph: 10.2 seconds
0 - 1/4 Mile: 12.3 sec.
Engine: V-12 540 HP
A dream sports car that offers just about the perfect combination of speed, luxury and safety, Ferrari 612 Scaglietti is setting roads on fire. With a 2+2 seating arrangement, this large two door coupe was designed to replace the much smaller Ferrari 456M sports car. Its gleaming all-aluminum body stretches 4.9 meters and has ample space in the rear seats to accommodate adults.
Named after one of Ferrari’s legendary coachbuilder, Sergio Scaglietti, supercar Ferrari 612 Scaglietti’s styling is setting standards for others to emulate. The leather trim comes in the same color as hat of the seats. What is more it extends all the way to the headlining and also to the side panels. The elegant cockpit with its modern dashboard design is sure to set the pulse racing. The cockpit of this sports car can in fact be personalized further thanks to the Carrozzeria Scaglietti program.
The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti sports car allows for easy entry for the passengers in the rear seat thanks to its longer wheelbase. The sinfully luxurious cabin can accommodate four people in total comfort. Driver comfort has been taken care off in a never before manner. Bugatti Veyron 16.4

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 specs
Top Speed: 248.5 mph / 400 km/h
0-60 mph: 2.7 seconds
Engine: Quad Turbo W-16

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 joined the league of supercars with a series of superlative modifiers such as the ´fastest, most powerful and most expensive´ street-legal production cars in the world. The ever powerful Veyron engine is capable of yielding 1020 to 1040 metric HP, and so the Veyron 16.4 supercar is now better known as the ´1001 horsepower´ car.

The famous sports car manufacturer, Bugatti Automobiles SAS, a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG, owns the prestigious title for manufacturing the super performer of the world. The name ´Veyron´ is attributed to the French racing driver Pierre Veyron who won the title ´24 hours of Le Mans´ in 1939 for Bugatti. Bugatti, with its long years of experience in making the traditional racing cars since the early ´90s, tries the track in the modern era with a well-advanced version of their technology applied in the Veyron 16.4.
Bugatti Veyron is an exclusive sports car for the 21st century. It exemplifies the perfect blending of design with technological concept.

Offering a high performance with serious measures to ensure safety was the major concern at Bugatti while yielding a maximum performance speed of 252.3 mph (406 km/h) to this leader of the modern era racing cars. Thanks to the single-piece carbon-fiber monocoque technology that absolutely suited the Bugatti Veyron supercar and scored the maximum points at various crash tests. Adding to this perfect body structure are other safety measures such as the airbags and the PAX system applied on the wheels and tires.

Another innovative safety measure applied is the rear spoiler of this sports car that performs double action – it provides the necessary downforce at high-speed driving, and it acts as a ´parachute brake´ during sudden braking. It helps to add additional air resistance to the brakes and thus reduces the braking distance of this supercar to great extent.

The W16 alloy engine is an important feature of the Veyron 16.4. The 16 cylinders are arranged in 4 banks of 4 cylinders. The engine uses four turbochargers that are capable of a displacement of 8.0L with an 86X86 mm bore and stroke. The dual-cultch DSG computer controlled manual transmission system sets the Veyron sports car to have full automatic transmission. The system is provided with seven gear ratios through the shifter paddles situated behind the steering wheel, and they offer 8ms shift time.

The wheels and tires are also modified to facilitate an improved performance of the new supercar. The all-wheel-drive helps to transfer the power efficiently to the road while speed driving. The Michelin run-flat tires used in the Veyron meet all the safety standards and suit the adventurous driving situations and racing conditions.

The brake system consists of a cross-drilled and turbine-vented carbon rotors. Each caliper is provided with eight titanium pistons. The braking system of Veyron supercar is so effective that it can produce a deceleration of 1.3g on road tires.

The interior of the Veyron 16.4 sports car features an exceptional design that exhibits the creativity and the aesthetics of the designer. The superb quality leather, the metallic trim, and the ergonomically set instrument panel add to the touching cockpit experience.

2006 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 sets itself an example to the luxury car world in terms of its design, technology, and the performance.

Ferrari F430

Ferrari F430 supercar is a successor to the older (and slightly overrated) sports car 360 Modena. It features an all-new engine that does not share any components with the 360 Modena’s engine. F430's 90-degree engine design derived directly from designs used in the Ferrari's Formula 1 engines. In fact, car name F430 came from its 4308 cc mid-engine which can produce 490 hp (an astonishing 114 hp per liter).
F430 supercar comes in two versions: a Coupe and an open top Spider, the latter being approx. $20,000 more expensive.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren specs
Top Speed: 207 mph / 334 km/h
0-60 mph: 3.6 seconds
0-100 mph: 7.6 seconds
0 - 1/4 Mile: 11.6 sec.
Engine: V8 5.5 liter 626 bhp @ 6500 rpm
A blast from the past and a taste of the future, this might just be a good description of the latest sports car that came out from a collaboration of Mercedes-Benz and McLaren, two big giants in the car manufacturing industry. We're talking about the 2004 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. This sports car combines the old yet astounding SLR race cars of the 50s and the latest and meanest technology of high-performance supercars. With the power of race cars and the sleek, curves and designs of a luxury car, the combination from the two car manufacturers is hard to beat.

This supercar is definitely fast. SLR McLaren sports a 626-horsepower supercharged 5.5-liter V8. Also, it has a full carbon-fiber monocoque, features crash structures and body panels. And with the supercharge V8 engine, you can see the 2004 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren go from naught to 60 miles per hour in less than 3.6 seconds. Top speed has been measured to exceed 200 mph, a feat that can only be achieved by very few even among the high performance sports cars. It was the high-performance division of Mercedes-Benz which created the V8s. The AMG were the ones who hand-build the supercharged V8 engines with top notched precision and quality. It is not at a big surprise to see the supercharged 5.5 (5439 cc) liter dry sumped 90 degree V8 engine to produce around 466.8 kW at 6500 rpm (626 hp) and 780 N·m (575 ft·lbf) torque at 3250 - 5000 rpm. The numbers maybe daunting but the sound of the engine will appease the minds of those who long for the perfect high performance cars.

Mounting that V8 engine into the body of SLR exotic car is also not as traditional as one would like to expect. The engine in SLR sports car is placed in a front mid-engine position just behind the front wheels. Instead of using the traditional oil-pan, dry-sump lubricants are used. With this innovation, it is highly possible to mount the engine to a level that used to be unachievable. Because of the low position of the engine in the supercar's body, the results are more than one hoped. The new Mercedez-Benz SLR McLaren race car has better aerodynamics and better handling due to the lower center of gravity.

Not only does the mean features of the sports car that attracts attention but how the two car companies were able to fuse their own traditions and expertise into a single exotic car. For one, McLaren's expertise in Formula 1 has been imbibed wholly by the SLR's design. The composition of carbon fiber material that was used in the body of the new SLR sports car is so Formula 1. Because of this body, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren has become more rigid and surprisingly strong.

But not to be outdone, counterpart Mercedes-Benz has also put a few tricks of its own. The German car maker added features that are deemed essential to the most important part of the vehicle: the passengers. Due to backgrounds in mostly luxury cars, Mercedes-Benz has ensured maximum occupant protection and safety. To my knowledge, the SLR is the only car so far that utilizes front crash structure made entirely of carbon fiber. The importance of this carbon fiber design can only be appreciated in actual crash test simulations. What the front carbon fiber crash structure does is it absorbs crash energy, four - five times more energy than ordinary steel structures actually, during a severe frontal collision. This protects the passengers during such accidents four times more than traditional steel structures found in other sports cars and supercars.

The SLR also has a five speed automatic transmission. There are modes, the Sport, Comfort and Manual which basically covers every known driving style. Sport is for everyday use, Comfort for bumpy or slippery roads, and Manual gives you control over the gears either through the touchpad or the levers on the steering wheel. When you use Manual, you open up three more modes, namely Sport, Supersport and Race. Speed increased significantly as you go up shifts.

Other notable features in this sports car include the high-performance technologies of ceramic brakes. The SLR uses ceramic reinforced with fiber on its brake pads. This technology allows this exotic car to have astonishing stopping power, and extraordinary high resistance to heat, exceptionally strong structure and long service life for the brakes.

With all these features it is not surprising that the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is classified as a sports car and a supercar. Remember to get this right, though, the "SLR" does not stand for "Sportlich, Leicht, Rennsport" which is German for "Sport; Light; Racing" as most people think. Its real meaning is "super-leicht, Rennsport" which means "super-light, racing." The sports car is being sold with a base price of €443,066 £300,000 or $450,000.

2006 SSC Ultimate Aero

SSC Ultimate Aero specs
Top Speed: 273 mph / 439.5 km/h
0-60 mph: 3 seconds
Engine: Supercharged V-8 1046 HP
America no longer takes a backseat in the world of supercars. The 2006 SSC Ultimate Aero is the fastest American car on the road. Shelby Super Cars (SSC) has created the Ultimate Aero as direct competition to the new Bugatti Veyron. The Ultimate Aero is best known for its stability and endurance at speeds greater than 250 mph. In fact, it is estimated (in wind tunnel tests) that the supercar’s top speed is closer to 273 mph.

Exclusive and Record Breaking Speed
The Ultimate Aero is an exclusive automobile to own. Only twenty-five Aeros will be created throughout 2006 and 2007. There is not an exact breakdown, however, of the number of traditional Aeros and Ultimate Aeros in that number. The traditional Aero sports car is nothing to sneeze at with top speeds around 240 mph, but the SSC Ultimate Aero rules the road. In fact, in the Ultimate Aero broke the Road & Track slalom record formerly held by the Ferrari Enzo

Distinctive Design
The Aero is designed with scissor doors, much like the Lamborghini and Ferrari sports cars. It also makes good use of carbon fiber and titanium. This keeps the overall weight of the Aero low to help with overall speed. Fast car Ultimate Aero has further modifications, including making almost all equipment optional, to further reduce weight. For example, the Ultimate Aero has no air conditioning or trunk space, but most would consider this a fair trade for the power the vehicle produces.

The Bottom Line
The SSC Ultimate Aero sports car is a premium example of American craftsmanship. Of course, supercars such as this come with a price tag capable of making a serious dent in your bottom line. The base Aero is available from around $240,000, while the Ultimate Aero is projected to reach a price closer to $650,000.

For those able to afford the ultimate in speed, no price is too high for such an exclusive and exotic machine. The rest of us will have to be content watching for the Ultimate Aero’s performance on the International Show Circuit beginning in November, 2006
